Our Wild Democracy

The Story, Promise, and Future of the Churches of Christ — a history of ideas in twelve chapters, and the collection behind it.

A movement drawn together from reformers, farmers, clergy, and laypeople of many traditions took root on the American frontier — and helped reshape the Christian imagination of millions. That movement was about ideas — and the practices that embodied those ideas. We explore that story to discover what is genuinely beautiful, and what is worth carrying forward with vision and imagination.

Chain of ideas

The ideas that animated this movement form a connected chain, where every step is entailed by the one before it.

  1. The table is eschatological. Communion is "a taste of the Millennial Church" — the age to come, arriving early.
  2. Therefore no one may be fenced from it. You cannot put a gate in front of God's future.
  3. Therefore the authority that fences it has to go. The open table causes the founding rupture; it does not merely accompany it.
  4. Therefore no caste may stand at its head. Every believer a priest, in the precise sense the word carries at an altar.
  5. Therefore it must be enacted constantly, in mutual witness. Practices do not persist between meetings the way offices do.
  6. And when the engine dies, the practices survive as law without foretaste. That is the fracture.
  7. Therefore recovery means restarting the engine, back at the table.

How to use this

Each session page gathers what this collection holds on that week's story: the people in it, the events it turns on, the primary documents, the exhibits that carry the idea, and the quotes worth reading aloud. The class narrative itself lives with the teacher; this is the room it is taught out of.
