Class Companion · Chapter 10

The Story of Congregational Singing

Before a cappella was ever a rule, it was a literacy movement — the church taught every farmer to sight-read four-part harmony the same way it taught every member to read Scripture.

(Nov 29)

The idea

Congregational singing is an embodied expression of the priesthood of all believers. All members have a voice.

The thread

The practice that voices it. A choir or an organ can carry the worship on your behalf; congregational singing structurally cannot. You cannot sing without hearing that every person in the room has a voice, and without knowing they are hearing yours.
