Robert Milligan

1814 — 1875 · scholar, theologian, professor

A Scottish-born theologian and professor in Kentucky, Robert Milligan was among the most systematic thinkers of the Stone-Campbell tradition. His influential textbook *The Scheme of Redemption* (1868) became a standard in Restoration colleges, presenting a rational, orderly account of Christian doctrine.

Milligan studied at Bethany College under Alexander Campbell, absorbing the movement's commitment to reasoned biblical interpretation. He later taught at Kentucky University (now Transylvania), where he shaped generations of preachers and teachers through his systematic theology and careful scholarship. His work exemplified the movement's confidence that Christian doctrine could be presented with philosophical rigor while remaining grounded in Scripture alone.
